Sativa vs. Indica

The Basics

If you didn’t know already, the two  types of cannabis, Sativa and Indica are used worldwide for medical purposes as well as recreational use!

Sativa is famously known for its head high that promotes an energizing effect. It helps in reducing stress or anxiety but also is used to increase creativity and focus.

Indica or “In da Couch” is famously known for its full-body effect, associated with increasing deep relaxation and reducing insomnia.

The term sativa was founded in Europe and western Eurasia to describe hemp plants where it was cultivated for its fiber and seeds. The term Indica was discovered in India for its intoxicating varieties  and was harvested for its seeds, fiber and hashish production

According to Medical News Today,Experts suggest there are over 700 strains in the world! So you might ask yourself, when it’s time to decide on strain, where do you even begin? Remember!  Sativa gives you a head high and is energizing while indica is more relaxing and calm.

Some people decide to use Sativa during the day to increase productivity and by the time night makes its appearance, they sign off with Indica to get a good night’s sleep! Totally your preference.

THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the property in cannabis that causes us to feel hungry and high, but also relieves symptoms like pain and nausea. THC-dominant strains are often chosen by consumers seeking a potent euphoric experience. These strains are also selected by patients treating pain, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and more.

Disclaimer: [ At this time effects of these strains predominantly come from people’s experiences. While researchers are studying effects on a range of medical conditions, they still have a long way to go.]

With there being over 700 strains there are hundreds and hundreds of unique names. Some names are identifiable in association to strain but there are also Hybrids that are created by combining both Sativa and Indica strains. Farmers select a variety of strains to produce the effects they want.  Cross breeding is a way farmers develop new strains
